The Origins of Coco

The Origins of Coco

Coco, released in 2017, is a delightful creation from the brilliant minds at Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures. But where did this magical tale begin?

  1. Inspiration from Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos):
    • The concept for Coco draws its inspiration from the rich and colorful Mexican holiday known as Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead. This annual celebration honors deceased loved ones, inviting them back to the world of the living for a joyful reunion.
    • Imagine marigold-adorned altars, sugar skulls, and families gathering in cemeteries to share stories and memories. It’s a time when death is not feared but embraced as part of life’s natural cycle.
  2. Development and Research:
    • Pixar embarked on the journey of creating Coco in 2016. Director Lee Unkrich, co-director Adrian Molina, producer Darla K. Anderson, and other members of the film’s crew immersed themselves in Mexican culture.
    • They traveled to Mexico, absorbing its vibrant traditions, exploring local markets, and connecting with families who generously shared their stories and customs. This research infused authenticity into every frame of the film.
  3. The Magical Land of the Dead:
    • The film’s protagonist, Miguel, a 12-year-old boy, accidentally finds himself in the enchanting Land of the Dead during Día de Muertos. There, he seeks the help of his great-great-grandfather, a deceased musician, to return to the living world.
    • The Land of the Dead is a visual feast—a bustling metropolis filled with colorful papel picado banners, glowing marigold petals, and whimsical alebrijes (spirit animals).
  4. Music and Michael Giacchino’s Score:
    • Music is at the heart of Coco. Miguel’s passion for music drives the plot, even though his family has banned it for generations.
    • Composer Michael Giacchino, known for his work on other Pixar films, crafted a soul-stirring score that weaves together Mexican folk tunes, mariachi melodies, and emotional themes.
  5. An All-Latino Principal Cast:
    • Coco made history by being the first film with a nine-figure budget to feature an all-Latino principal cast. Anthony Gonzalez (Miguel), Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, and others lent their voices to these endearing characters.

The Impact and Legacy

  • Coco premiered during the Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico, just before the actual Día de Muertos. Its theatrical release followed suit, capturing hearts worldwide.
  • Audiences praised the film’s stunning animation, heartfelt storytelling, and its respectful portrayal of Mexican traditions.
  • With a global box office gross of over $814 million, Coco became one of the highest-grossing animated films of its time.

So, next time you watch Coco, remember the love, family bonds, and the magic that bridges life and the afterlife. And perhaps, just like Miguel, you’ll find yourself humming along to “Remember Me.”

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
